The ending of an era.

If you’re a girl (or guy for that matter) who is in to fashion or Blake Lively, you tuned in for the series finally of Gossip Girl this past Monday. TV shows and movies alike influence the fashion world more than we realize. I recently spoke about how Americans are becoming less trend followers and more trendless, but there are some fashion trends that are just inevitable; You just mindlessly follow them.

The T.V. show Friends aired for 10 seasons, 1994-2004. I never watched the show when it was on; however it indirectly influenced me.

Those pins Rachel Green wore in her hair? I wore.

Those chip clips Phoebe wore? I wore.

The chokers Monica wore? I had about 15 I wore interchangeably.

The Movie Mean Girls came out April 30, 2004.  I was only 13 at the time and wasn’t allowed to see it. Sure, I saw it later on, but that was when I was already deep into my mini skirt phase which lasted for my high school career.

What? Mean Girls wore minis? Whodathought?

Gossip Girl is no different than these previous classics. It ran for 6 seasons, September 2007- December 2012 and has inspired many fashion trends.

Statement pieces.

And many more things that America copied.

Don’t trust me? It’s not just my opinion and it was like that from the get go. Gossip Girl has definitely been the influential fashion show during this recession and I am sad to see it go. Who is next in line to trend inspiring throne? That’s a secret I’ll never tell.

You know you love me.

I’m a bow tie kind of girl.

We all know that bow ties are in right now- whether you’re a fratstar or a hipster, they look good. But what about for girls?

If you have read my previous posts, you know how I feel about menswear. For those who are new, I LOVE menswear. I seriously could dress guys all day long and be content… J. Crew, will you take me?

Anyway, another point I’ve made is how I like to wear mens clothing such as shirts or cardigans. An androgynous look with a feminine twist is very in right now. One accessory that is gaining wide spread popularity for women to wear is the bow tie. This summer when I was working for JC Penney, there were a couple of girls who came in and they were shopping for bow ties for themselves! At that point, I knew I was not alone in my love for the accessory!

One of my favorite things to sew for Southern Elle are bow ties. I got so jealous that I started making them and wearing them as headbands. My sister looks adorable rocking this maroon star bow tie headband. I have a tendency to buy fabrics that are pretty and then figure out what I’d like to do with them. I fell in love with a brown cotton blend with white polka dots and decided to make a bow tie out of it…for myself.  I love the way it looks with the chambray shirt. I’ll definitely be wearing it again. But don’t my word for the trend…Check out the Ralph Lauren ad below. She makes bow ties look phenomenal. Also, one of my favorite American made brand is Kiel James Patrick. He is coming out with a new collection of bow tie bracelets. I’m in heaven.

If the bow tie is a little too boyish for you, then try a similar idea with a scarf!

If scarves are still to big for you, then rock a lady tie! They are basically necklaces for your shirt.

This trend may be new for some, but in reality, it’s only resurfacing. We saw this hit in 2009, but the masses are just now picking it up. That shouldn’t surprise you though, because when a new idea occurs we are usually slow to adapt.

Whether it’s for a costume or to show your trendy side,  rock a bow tie and you can’t go wrong.

Menswear of the Moment.

The Avengers did more than beat the box office record for Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows-Part 2…they succeeded in making a hilarious yet action packed movie that many moviegoers fell in love with. RDJ’s witty retorts, Chris Hemsworth’s attractiveness, Scarlett Johansson sexiness, and Chris Evans’ fashion sense; I could go on and on.

Being an apparel major, my eye is drawn to clothing. Chris Evans’  very first outfit is what caused me to follow his clothing choices throughout the movie. The picture above is that very one I am speaking of. I love how the pants are a little more high waisted than usual. The waistband is thicker, which allows a wide belt to accentuate his midsection. I loved the color scheme and just how hipster and effortlessly cool he looked.

I’ve been a fan of him since The Fantastic Four, but I never really thought of him as a fashion icon until now. I love this denim Louis Vuitton button up, coupled with the skinny navy tie.

There he goes again showing off his fashion sense! The brown tie is modern, but classic and in my opinion, pulls the whole outfit together.

One of the clothing brands that I believe excels in menswear is Brooks Brothers. Who else can say that they have dressed 39 out of 44 presidents?  I’d say that’s pretty reputable. They always bring together timeless pieces with a trendy twists. Pops of color have been a major trend lately and I’m glad to see it transfer over into menswear.

Not only have I seen it in adds for J. Crew and Brooks Brothers, but I’ve also seen it on the streets. While studying for my Economics exam in one of Baylor’s libraries, I snapped this picture above. I really liked the guy’s choice of blue shorts and his loafers were classy. (Call me creeper if you’d like. I don’t care.)

My sister’s boyfriend’s prom was this weekend so I went with them to take pictures. This boy showed up to take snapshots with the group and I instantly liked his entire outfit. It takes a confidant person to pull off blue paisley pants but I think he did an exceptional job of it. I appreciate the lengths he went to in coordinating his outfit. Look at the detailing all the way down to his shoes!! His is also sporting a bow tie which is very in right now. While guys usually decide to wear all white suits and coordinate with pimp hats and canes to prom, I was happy to see that someone was willing to stand out and show some fashion sense.

This was another suit I appreciated. Khaki is just a fun color to work with. I thought it was crisp and clean, and of course I liked his bow tie.

(Obviously I thought my sister and her boyfriend looked precious.)

The direction that mens fashion is going in excites me. For the first time it may excite me a little more than womenswear. GQ  is great for finding out what is in and what isn’t- they’re just an overall  classic publication which is why I like them. Their Swagger-Jacking of the week this week featured Chace Crawford. He’s a Texas boy and a Gossip Girl star…what’s not to love? One of the items that was said to be his style and right on trend were skinny ties. It made me smile because those are the type of ties that I’m currently sewing and selling.

Here’s some of my latest neckwear for Southern Elle.

Reigning Style Royalty.

Everyone has style, but whether it is good or bad, is the question. Here are a few people, who in my opinion, are rocking the fashion show of life.

1) Pippa Middleton. Her sister may be royalty, but she is the budding, new, fashion princess. In my opinion, she almost showed Kate up at the wedding, with her stunning dress. Didn’t see it? Here’s a recap. In this picture, she looks effortlessly chic. she is wearing her classic ray-bans, a yellow purse (I’m dying for a yellow purse!,) and she is wearing a summery version of black- I love wearing black all season and I don’t care if I’m asked what funeral I’m going to- Paul Poiret asked Coco Chanel that in the beginning of her era and look where it got her!

2) Bryce Dallas Howard. Not only is she the daughter of Ron Howard, and movie star, but she is quite the fashionista. Look at her in the picture when she was on Jay Lenno…she is perfectly poised, with her bright blue jeans (colored denim is very in right now.), her nails are painted just the right color to coordinate with her rockin’ ring, and my favorite part…her hair, and I’m not just saying it because she and her father are gingers. She has it teased with tousled curls…my favorite kind of Texas hair. In addition to her natural style, she has good taste, because she is the new spokesperson for Kate Spade…which is one of my very favorite designer labels.

3)Blake Lively. Yes, yes, I love watching Gossip Girl, but I liked Blake way before her Gossip Girl days. I love her outfit in this candid shot. High-waisted shorts get an A+ in my fashion book. Well, I like almost anything high-waisted… Her chunky watch is very fashion forward and it complements the simplicity of her navy and white…one of my favorite color combinations. I also love big, leather bags, so this outfit is definitely a winner.

On the note of fashion, Texas is a pretty fashionable place. It has to be if it is the only stop in the United States for John Paul Gaultier’s museum exhibit. And guess where it is going to be?! At the Dallas Museum of Art! I’m so excited for this!

Following right along on path of fashion, Kate Spade just  became even more of a favorite to me. Starting in January 2011, Kate Spade NY presented a “color of the month” and all of their new arrivals are shades or tints of that color. In March, they redid their website, allowing a “shop” or  “play” option. So cute. Anyway, they are known for their bright, fun, colors, so I was completely surprised when their color, or should I say colors of the month, were black and white! Their new arrivals are adorable, and because I love to wear black in spring and summertime, I am so glad those are the colors they chose. See all of their new arrivals, here.

I’ll end this post with one of my favorite Kate Spade sayings…

“Live Colorfully.”
